2008 6.07.2008 - Rochester Jazz Festival reports: Tackling
anything by Tom Waits is like wrestling an alligator: do
it well and you`ve got a new pair of shoes:, screw up
and you`re dead, Jack. Describing themselves as a
Dixiland funeral with an infinite happy end, Billy`s band
is on the fringe in its St.Petersburg home and will be on
the fringe of the fringe here. Bandleader, Billy Novik
barks gruff and hip (in Russian and English) just like
Waits – or perhaps Cookie Monster on a vodka bender. A
great deal of the band`s repertoire is Waits` stuff, and
when the band ventures out on its own, the genius, the
oddity, and the antiquated charm still shines, just like
those alligator shoes I was talking about. Billy's

A live one, recorded on 14.10.2005 at the concert at DK GORKOGO in St.Petersburg. The presentation will take place at the band`s next concerts, on April 1 and 2 at Teatr Kinoactyora in Moscow and on April, 27 at Music Hall in St. Petersburg.

Album Release!!! A concert presentation of the Band’s new
album “ Being Tom Waits / Èãðû â ÒîìàÓýéòñà“
is to be held on 11-12 November in St. Petersburg (Teatr
Estrady) and on 18 November in Moscow (ÖÄÕ). The album
is a sound-track to the cognominal theatrical performance
and includes cover versions of Tom Wait’s songs and
Billy Novik’s (the vocalist) lyric soliloquies. It also
comprises several most early records dated back to the
band’s “Waits Period” – the time of “extreme
despair”, as Billy has recently called it. The coming
concert will be of the same lyric coloring as the album.
It will have the traditional hallmark of The Billy’s
Band “sit-down” concerts, which create a genuine
atmosphere of the real life with its varieties of
fortune, mishaps and irrepressible joy. It is this
emotional explosion that attracts the public to The
Billy’s Band concerts. People look for an opportunity
to live a full life through listening to the live music.
Specially for the concert the Band prepared new songs and
new “chats”. The fans who have known the musicians
for quite a long time will be definitely pleased by the
fact that finally there is to be a CD on which the Band
sounds its classical ‘Tom Waits Style’. The Billy’s
Band remains true to itself since the album was created
by its own efforts. Art-trio “Purga” is responsible
for the apparel design of the album. The distribution is
going to be done by the Band itself, which means the
story of the CD will be the same as of the previous
albums: it will be possible to buy it only at the
concerts. The release of the fifth album summarizes the
Billy’s Band creative youth, paying tribute to its

The Billy’s Band had to cancel one of its concerts at SDK MAI on 11 May 2005. We have to announce that The Billy’s Band is not in charge of the cancellation of the concert and was not the one to initiate it. We received an offer for the concert from SDK MAI promoters. They had been well aware of the band’s tough schedule. Nevertheless, they have announced the concert, plus put on innumerable posters all around Moscow. Just a day before SDK MAI promoters informed the band of the cancellation of the concert. We were disappointed, not to say more… We have been encouraged to make a good one! With this purpose, we have invited our friends from St.Petersburg, really wonderful session musicians… We are disappointed just as our Moscow fans! In this very situation, The Billy’s Band professional reputation was tempted. We declare the following: The Billy’s Band never cancels its concerts on our own will. We will perform for any-number of people whether large or small, since we always have what to say to the audience! This fall we are to release a new album and DVD. Three new tracks have already been recorded: tribute for Andrey Petrov and kids’ album, including «A Song Of The Cat and The Pirate” «Ïåñíÿ Êîòà è Ïèðàòà» from the famous “The Blue Puppy” cartoon. The Band has recently performed at an annual jazz festival “Russian Style. Mansion. Jazz”«Ðóññêèé ñòèëü. Óñàäüáà. Äæàç» and was invited as a performer/guest/headliner to a number of other open air events. The next Moscow Billy’s Band concert is scheduled on 23 June, 2005 at ÖÄÕ. The performers are Billy Novik, Anton Matezius and Andrey Ryzhik. 25 March 2005 We continue to get lamenting letters from our fans claiming that The Billy’s Band’ CDs are unavailable in the regions. The only exception is our latest album “Having Fun St. Pete Style”«Îòîðâåìñÿ ïî-ïèòåðñêè!». We are not responsible for the lack of CDs! We have a number of St.Petersburg distributors. It looks like regional distributors cannot establish good commercial relation with those from St.Petersburg. We sincerely urge you! Should you be our real fan, please inform the management of regional musical shops about our St.Petersburg distributors.
